1998 v70 leaky axle shaft seal

Hello , I replaced a badly leaking seal on the passenger side, but still have a slight leak .
I was very careful to try and not to damage the seal and I have it flush in the housing . Lubed it with ATF inside and out and the axle slid right in . This isn't the first seal I have ever mounted , but am I missing something here ?. Thank you , Bruce

Seems like you did a careful installation. Are you sure it's the right seal? OEM by any chance?

Volvo Axle Seal - Corteco 6843112 from Eeuroparts . Sure looked good . Never had a problem with seals , gaskets etc,. from them when I used to order parts for my old Saabs. Bruce

Was the axle recently changed? I had a leak problem on one of mine after I replaced the axle so I replaced the seal and it continued to leak. The cheap axle itself turned out to be the problem, it had a slightly smaller diameter than the original axle.

yes, there was a cheap reman on it when I bought it . Was going to replace it since it has a slight hop that I think is the cause of my vibration over 60-65 mph. Thanks you Lee , Bruce

Options:

1. Slight Leak: just watch it and top up as needed.

2. Change the axle: not necessary b/c another one may have the shaft re-machined anyway.

3. Different seal: this may be an option. Search SKF online catalogue and look for a seal with:
- Same "bore" dimension.
- Slightly smaller "shaft" dimension so it is a tighter fit.

If you know it is a cheap reman axle, I wouldn't mess with it I would replace it with a factory one, where you live it should be easy to get one from the junkyard.

I have the exact same problem.

I had to replace the U-Joint and the old seal started leaking after I put the axle back into place. Replaced the seal quite meticulously making sure not to pinch it, keeping it from going in slanted, etc. The new seal ended up leaking almost as much as the old one did. However, I payed close attention to my ATF levels during a 600 road trip and I don't think it's leaking much on the road. I didn't have to add any fluid at all. Also, once I got home it seemed like the leak was getting better for some reason (?) I leave maybe 4-6 drops of atf on the road every time I park the car.

I was going to try and fiddle with the seal a little bit more this weekend to see if I can get a better fitment.

Just to give you an example, SKF 15737 seal has:
O.D. = 2.489
Shaft = 1.575

The point is to find a seal that has a tighter shaft side, maybe 1.40 or so. Look up SKF seal on the online catalog:

Thanks to all that responded . Since the leak is minor and I still have a vibration through the steering wheel ,I may be replacing the axle anyway. Nothing felt when braking , no bearing problems apparent , tires balanced I'm thinking axle. I noticed a hop on that axle when I had the car up on stands .
