Shortly after posting on here about replacing my hood latch (which hadn't happened yet), my hood ended up blowing back over my windshield, shattered it, bent the hood hinges, etc. Now that I've replaced my windshield, I need a new hood. How difficult should I expect it to be to replace myself? I haven't been able to find anything online as far as videos or anything about replacing a hood for a Volvo.
Thanks
JJ

While I haven't done it myself, the process is in the Chilton's manual (72302). It only lists like 6 steps: basically disconnect any wires and tube, unbolt the hood from the hinges, then remove the hinges. The book points out the bolts you need to deal with. It seems where the trouble comes in is in aligning the new hood to the car (the book mentions marking where the hinge and hood meet). Sorry this is probably not the step by step tutorial you are looking for, hopefully it helps somewhat. If you can get the Chilton's book it is worth it.
Glad to see you are safe after that experience. What you described sounds scary!

I'll look a little closer to the hinges today. There was just 2 or 3 bolts on the 960, don't think the 850 will be much different.

I can show you an example and get in depth with the procedure if you have questions. Look at my wagon in the maintenance log here,
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 35&t=56550
The previous owner had done that, (the hood flip). It involves new hinges, fender removal, and what I had done with a rubber mallet. I had used a wooden plank with mallet to smooth the corners of the bent hood after installing the scrap hinges. These were approx. $8. ea. which I sprayed white to match my car.
Get back with me if you need. Good luck.

Thanks for posting that video Robert. I did not want to bend my fenders while removing the hinges. I had also needed to remove the bumper and did all at the same time.
My log shows what I had done.

The fenders only need to come off if you are replacing the hood and the hinges otherwise just the hood is rather simple. Only thing is you have technically 3 hood latches one over each headlight that work from the cable and actually hold down the hood then the third manual one which only is a handle to pull up the hood but must function, it is often repaired with a zip tie or wire hanger.

When the hood flies, it destroys the hinges. They can be bent back into shape, but replacing is easier. Even if removing the fenders is needed. Trust me.
Edit: Use an 1/8" drill, or there about to remove the rivets from the fender liner. It is quick and easy.

We just replaced a hood and hinges. I wouldn't even waste my time attempting to fix the bent ones.
Just like he said, the hardest part was getting the spring on the new hinges..other than that it was relatively easy. It helps to have another person help with the hood.
I think the two of us did it in 90 minutes.

Correct Sir.
I wanted to reinforce, you will likely need a helper to get the springs on.
I had used a pry bar while a friend held the hinge loosely bolted for wiggle room.
Care is important. The guy that works with me has no fear, has been doing these things for a while.
He is a crazy musician friend of mine so be careful.
