1994 850 Wagon (Base) - Code 1-2-1, Stalling Issue

Post by jjs70pdx »

My mystery issue with stalling returned this past weekend. Noticed a bit of hesitation upon shifting into reverse, then drive. Drove a short distance back home and the car stalled just as I was pulling into my driveway (how convenient). Started the car the next day, noticed slightly rough idle and CEL light was on. I ran the codes and got 1-2-1 - faulty MAF sensor. Was able to reset the CEL, but have not driven it since then. The previous owner replaced the MAF with an OE Bosch brand new one before I purchased the car last October.

I cleaned the throttle body and IACV a few months ago as a preventative given the similar previous symptoms, but did not get to the MAF. Advice please - Should I clean the MAF with CRC cleaner and see if that helps? Would code 1-2-1 come up for any other reason? Thanks.

It could be a cruddy connector. Does the car smooth out when you unplug the MAF sensor altogether?

If the car runs better with the MAF unplugged then it is likely bad.

Hi Lee,

I haven't tried that yet. Just tried starting it with MAF plugged in and it stalled within about 30 seconds. So unplug the connector to the MAF and restart to see if the rough idle/stall discontinues?

Correct. The car will run all day without the MAF but it won't run great. The throttle response will be weird and the mileage will stink but it is a good test for a bad MAF sensor.

It would not start at all (tried twice) with MAF disconnected. Set off CEL light again, and still coming up with 1-2-1 code.

Are you getting any codes from port A-6? Without the MAF the ECU substitutes values from the other sensors to make fuel decisions and if one of those sensors is also messed up it won't run at all.

Went ahead and cleared the codes before I got your message. Just 1-1-1 from A-2 and A-6 now. Althoughwhen I tested A-6 a few nights ago before resetting the first time it was 1-1-1 as well.

Any help on what else I can troubleshoot would be much appreciated. Car engine is cranking but not starting at all now. I have no codes to read since I cleared them before it wouldn't start and just have 1-1-1 all around now from A2 and A6.
