Hi Guys,

I am hoping to change out my V70 XC's timing belt, rollers and water pump in the next few days. My car has the automatic adjustment system and I had a few questions before taking everything apart. I have read over a few tutorials on how to do this and I have the haynes manual, but I was wondering if there was any additional advice anyone could give a newbie to maybe make this process easier, as this is my first time ever replacing this stuff (I am relatively mechanically inclined, but not super experienced  ). My second question is can anyone provide a breakdown of how to reuse and re-compress the hydraulic tensioner? I have not really found a great explanation on how exactly this is done.

Any help or advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated! This forum has been a great source of information :D

PS: Hydraulic tensioner, compress very slowly with a vise or wood-working pipe clamp (this is what I use b/c I own some wood-working tools).
Below is a sample photo of wood-working pipe clamp:

I forgot to mention that it takes about 5-7 min to compress the HT.

...when you fully compress it,check for leaks at it and if there are no leaks, insert a piece of steel wire on it's opening to lock it.When you allign everything and when time comes....just pull the "granade pin",triple re-check your timing marks before and after you fully turn the crankcase manually for whole 3 revolutions before starting engine.

Just a clarification: are we just testing the integrity of the H.T. before we re use it to see if it is leaking? Or does it have to be re-compressed to be reinstalled?

The latter. It must be re-compressed to be re-installed, so check it for leaks at that time.

Hi all,

Another quick question before I start this job, if a cam gear happens to fall out of alignment when I have the belt off, is it aright to simply turn it back to the mark?
