1996 volvo 850 brake noise

Post by thpave »

My 1996 volvo 850 has been making brake noises for a long time. After going to midas, I changed a new pair of front brake pads and discs according to their suggestion. Also, I had my calipers checked, which were said to be totally fine, although they seem very rusted. Now, the car is still making noise while braking. What could the problems be? Thx!

Can you describe the noise? Is it a squeal, a grinding sound, or a rattle?

If you paid the big bucks for a shop to fix your brakes take it back and make them fix it correctly or give you a refund.

It is kinda more like squeal, and you can hear it from far far away...

Volvos are notorious for squealing brakes unless they are replaced with OEM Volvo brake pads. I just replaced my front rotors and pads a couple of weeks ago and I am having good luck with Mintex brand pads, at least on the front, but I used some RTV like goop from Permatex called "Disc Brake Quiet" that I got at the local Advance Auto Parts. FCP Groton suggests a brake grease called Syl-Glyde as a backer on the pads to keep them quiet.

From past experience with my 740's the Raybestos or other national chain pads will scream like a banshee and there isn't much you can do about it short of changing out the pads again. The "Disc Brake Quiet" or Syl-Glyde is worth a shot though.

For what it's worth, the fronts tend to be more manageable than the rears when it comes to squealing.

And even the OEM pads in the rear will squeal too. Use ALOT of the brake pad lube and that will help.

Just to make sure we are communicating well here, it goes on the back of the pad, not on the friction surface.

I have visions of the first time trying to stop if someone got it wrong.

For the rear pads, make sure you also use the shims.

I only use OEM pads now since some of the aftermarket ones I've tried never stop squealing.
