So my 2003 XC 70 has 220,000kms on it, I bought it used about a year ago. About 6 months ago it would occasionally not start every couple weeks or so. After an hour or several or sometimes overnight it would start right up fine. Now it won't start at all and I've tried everyday for about 3 weeks! The no start condition didn't seem to be dependant on engine temp, fuel level or anything else I could identify. Fortunately the last time it did the no start was at home in my garage so I can work on it.
I took an OBDS scanner and pulled a code P0014 and P0071, the check engine light has been on since this issue started. I also noticed that there is no fuel pressure at the schrader valve when I went to check fuel pressure.
I am wondering what to do next. Should I change the Fuel Pump, cam position sensor, or is it more likely a CVVT issue? Can I check the fuel pump somehow? I should also mention that the DIM is all goofed up so I cannot read any messages on it till I send it out for rebuild. I was originally thinking that it might be an antenna ring issue but I tried a new one with no luck. Also did the lock unlock thing to reset the immobilizer if that was maybe causing the no start.
I am fairly mechanically able and love the car but need to get it running and don't want to just start throwing new parts at it. Thanks in advance for any advise!

I think you can jump the fuel pump relay on a P2 to see if you can get the pump running.
With no pressure at the rail, you have isolated it to fuel delivery, do let's solve that problem first!

I will check that out next. When they key is turned to the #2 position I can hear something running for a few seconds…..my understanding is that this is the brake accumulator. I do not think that I can hear a fuel pump. I will have to wait till the weekend to try and jump the relay. Thanks.

0014 is a communication code.
Someone is going to have to check the ECU connectors and pins CAREFULLY, (it needs to be removed), and then each wire going off of it.
Needs a tester, wire by wire

Are you suggesting that I have to take it to the dealer or can I check the ecu and associated connectors? I thought that p0014 was in reference to the camshaft position. I'm currently more concerned about the lack of fuel pressure, it seems most cars with a p0014 code still start and run.

Yes, work on the fuel problem first - then move on to the next. With no pressure at the rail, you have isolated it to fuel delivery, do let's solve that problem first!

I checked the fuel pump relay, swapped it with the fog light relay, same part number, seems to be ok. Still no sound from the fuel pump. Is there a wire I should check next for voltage for the pump?

You go back to the pump and check voltage there. If you find it and have a good ground, you need a new pump.
If you don't find 12 V, you trace back upstream until you find the 12 V, then fix the break

K thanks, will do tomorrow. Also, I have a p0014 code. I read somewhere that if the Camshaft position sensor is failed the ECU would prevent fuel pump operation if it doesn't recognize the engine turning, any truth to that?
