Hello all,
New to Volvo's and just bought a used xc90 t6 for our family. Was running fine and was doing some basic repairs such as fuel filter, air filter, oil change ext and got some codes regarding the engine running rich. Codes came up 2178, 2180, 2190. Then the other night the car stalled and was running erratically and wouldn't move. I got out, unplugged the MAF sensor and boom it ran. So I went online and bought the correct brand new MAF sensor which was OE Bosch and was not a remanufactured unit. Got the sensor today and installed it and still get erratic rpm and idle then the car dies. Unplug the sensor and the car runs fine. Could it be a defective sensor? What are other areas I should look into? Thank you for any input you may have.
Joe

So those codes seem to be:
P2178: Long Term Fuel Trim Upper Limit
P2180: Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 2 - Upper Limit
P2190: Long Term Fuel Trim, Bank 2 - Lower Limit
If you enter the codes into the search bar at the top, you can find a couple of threads dealing with this:

I have usually found long term fuel trim to mean it's time to replace the oxygen sensor. Their response gets slow over time, and when they don't respond fast enough it sets a code. But see what others have run into before jumping into replacing parts.

Looking around, this can also be caused by intake air leaks, especially at idle. Maybe give it a good inspection and see if there are any leaks, holes, failed vacuum elbows, etc.
Also, thinking about it, the O2 sensors would set the code, but not cause the other driveability issues you mentioned, so I tend to suspect them less in your case.

I would try another MAF It would not be the first time someone got a bad new electronic part. Also, check the vacuum lines to the turbo controls, the sensor on the brake booster line etc.'s one on the lower side of the over the engine ducting, and one at the LH side of the intake manifold that are easy to miss
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
