2001 C70 VVT Hub Cam Seal Locking Tool?

Post by cuhfs »

2001 C70 160K miles and I am getting ready to dig into the problem of it losing all oil (you can see in pic sprayed everywhere). Appears to be the cam seal at the VVT hub (exhaust cam). Am I correct that I wont need locking tool if I put it in time before removing T belt and mark the hub and parts that I remove and reinstall at same exact location? I Watched Roberts vid and it does show the locking tool used but he did all 4 seals both sides of cams. I don't see why I would need to lock if nothing is moved (just removed) but everything is then replaced where it was, as marked? Any thoughts? Do I need to use locking tool?

You WILL need the tool anytime you break one of those VVT hubs loose.

For 1999+ models with VVT, yes a locking tool is needed.
The tool is about $50-$60 on ebay.

The relationship of the cam seals and the VVT sprocket is rather interesting. See link below.
Make sure you use only Volvo OEM or Corteco (which is OEM) b/c you don't want to do this job twice.
We talked about the cam seals for VVT cars in the thread below:

Abscate, I have the tool because I bought it when my 04 C70 skipped time due to the serp belt wrapping around the crank. Couldn't have done repair without Robert DIY's help, and the entire forum. Like many here I have gone from oil changes only, to major repairs in a short amount of time. Anyway, I very much appreciate the offer and if you can let me know when your driving by Route 80 (it be great - to buy you a beer) I am near Allamuchy, NJ Route 80 exit 19.
