2003 V70 Tie Rods

Hi guys, 2003 V70 2.4 FWD Auto.

I posted the link below to a video of me moving my driver's side tie rod. Passenger side has the same movement.

Is this normal?

Being able to "slide" it is okay (if that makes sense), but there should not be any "open play" in it. It should not click or clunk as your trying to lift it up and down.

Wow, yep thats quite SHOT to hell.!
Just did mine a few days ago. Mine were not that bad, yours are going to fail .
First tighten them up so they don't click up and down, I would replace asap.
Perhaps they were installed wrong if both have come loose like that. Its a bit of a coincidence eh?

I would go buy parts and not drive as they are unless you absolutely have to, stay off hiways.
I got moog, $66ea at autozone, they have em in stock.

The easy way to remove is to hold the jam nut with large vicegrip wedged against the body or anything that will prevent it from rotating,
then grab the =shaft= of the tie rod with a large wrench and just unscrew it, leave the jam nut alone.
Mine was the exact same length so I didn't bother counting threads.
Screw the new one on tight up to the jam nut, check the other tie rod and also the inner rods, replace any bad ones and then get it aligned.

One other thing, getting the nut off the tie rod end can be difficult, some have an allen end , you insert an allen key to prevent the threads from spinning with the nut, spray with your favourite penetrating oil, brush threads with wire brush and it should come off easily.
Other designs have 2 flats you can grab with vice grips, then use a box end wrench to loosen nut.

It's quite worn, it got play to it so will need replaced.
Make sure not to use some meyle or other cheaper brands, it will last 1 year. Lemforder for this part

Any tips on checking inner tie rods for wear?

Also, when watching the video i posted, is my outer tie rod end installed upside down? The nut is on the top and it seems that most outer tie rod ends have the nut on the bottom.

Mine is the same, doesn't matter.

When the tie rod is disconnected pull the inner section in and out, listen or feel for slop or clicking.

Alright thanks for the info.

I have vibration at highway speeds I can feel through the steering wheel under acceleration as well as just cruising. Could my worn tie rods be the cause of this?

You're lucky the wheels are still on the car, its a time bomb. Change the rods out and test drive it. Then you'll know.
