06 xc70 vs 09 xc90

Post by Dadvid »

I'm considering buying one of these for my wife: 2006 xc70 5cyl turbo or 2009 xc90 3.2. I am partial to the xc90; i hear the 3.2 is kind of dull but reliable (like me) but my wife likes the look of the 70. They both have @100k miles. We would be happy with either but my main concern is durability for the next 100k. Which do you think would be the best bet?

Is the '09 XC90 turbocharged? Perhaps all XC90's are. Turbos like premium fuel.
Service records are king here. Skipped oil changes/cheapo oil are bad.
Both have the more modern AWD system but both (I believe) run happier with matched tires.
Cost of each?
3.2 has a chain. The '06 needs a timing belt yesterday.
Do both cooling systems have blue coolant in them?
Do both drive straight down the highway with the steering wheel straight?
Are the wheels scuffed up?
How do they shift?

I'm in No.NJ and there's a 2008 XC70 NON-TURBO 3.2 w/46K and the bloke is asking $14,500. If I was in the market.....

Dadvid, Which xc90 to buy first generation that will help. I've got a few Repair Database posts that discuss buying a first gen XC90... most/all lead back to various MVS forum discussions.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

1998 V70, no dash lights on

1997 850 T5 [gone] w/ MSD ignition coil, Hallman manual boost controller, injectors, R bumper, OMP strut brace

The best bet is the car that has had already repairs such as suspension, control arms...done at the main dealer.
The XC90 will cost more in repairs.
I would go with the XC70 (you don't want to hear the "I told you to get the XC70" later on ;)), only issue I think the AWD was fragile up to somewhere in the middle of 2006, if your had the weaker parts it will fail if not already failed - the car will keep going only the rear wheels won't have traction. The XC70 also needs a timing belt which is not a biggie, a local independent Volvo garage should replace it for less than $500 - the water pump should not be replaced with the first belt.

This is a list of repairs after @100k miles on a S60 - the XC have AWD plus a few others parts that may need repairs on top of it

The 3.2 6 is less reliable an engine as the 5 as long as the 5 has been WELL SERVICED.
Toss a coin, SERVICE RECORDS is what's most important considering both have 100K miles
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
