Whinning noise under hood-99 Volvo S70 Turbo

Post by youngsinauburn »

I have a noise coming form under my hood. It seems to be coming from the passengers side. The best way to describe the noise is that of the motor on the antenna sounds when going up. The noise starts when you first turn the key before turned over.

Any idea what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

It may just be the idle air control valve. It makes noise in key position II without the motor running. It is a normal sound.

Is the car otherwise running OK?

Found out what it was today. It was my motor for the headlight wiper.

Thanks

Thats good to know, I have the same issue on my car however I think its related to the a/c system. Everytime I turn off the a/c after having it on for awhile this high pitched sound comes from the passenger side for about 5 seconds.

I had the same noise coming from my driver's side, under the battery. It sounded different than the sound the secondary air pump had always made but I thought it might be trying to die. Turns out it was the headlight wiper motor. The plug is not located in where the VADIS says it is. Just look for a rust/dull red color plug. The two possible locations described in the VADIS are either in front of the radiator or on the back of the headlight assembly, above the light sockets. I read a thread somewhere about how the back of the motor casing can be popped off, rendering it inoperable, if the wiper spindle to which the wiper arm is connected is hit from the front. I could see that that has happened to mine.

To volvo-ski , The noise from the passenger side after turning the car off when the a/c is on is probably just the residual pressurized freon entering the evaporator. I have heard this in cars in the past and it is probably normal.

Agreed. My '98 T5 makes that sound any time I turn it off with the A/C running.

I can't speak for other model years, but my 1997 850 GLT Wagon (aka 855) most certainly has an air pump under the battery tray.
