Back on the topic.
Members from volvospeed claim that s,v70 cluster will be direct fit and fully functional from '97 and '98 s,v70 into my '97 850.
'99+ will not work because of CAN network.
Now....since they look completelly the same from '97(EU market cars) to '00....are part numbers different?
If so....can somebody post part numbers of the cluster from '97 and '98 s,v70 and '99+?
I found one cluster localy but don't know is it from pre '99 or '99+ car.
I can't return it after buying,so i need to know for sure.

As far as i could investigate...they have production date behind or under it.
But....'98 could be '98 and '99(for example...'98 for model year '99)....depeding on which part of the year it was manufactured.
So...part numbers could be the only valid info.
***As soon as you get back from that "Siberian" holiday...it would be nice to post those part numbers and pictures.***

Misha!
3d print a new gear! There’s a free schematic up on Thingiverse right now, and if none of your friends have a 3d printer and there’s no local Makerspace- your local university / community college / high school computer science department is guaranteed to have one these days! Should cost less than a $1!

Nice idea....but i will need to remove the cluster first....disassemble it...print the gear and put everything back.
This would be plug and play with upgraded digital odometer, nicer cluster and no future problems with odometer gears.

Misha, it is available in the EU: Skandix.de has the odometer gear, costs about 15 Euro and then probably around 15 more to ship. There are three versions. I just ordwred one 3 weeks ago.
Also: I doubt that the digital odometer receives the same data as the electric motor that spins the odometer gear.

I can have the whole cluster for 20-25€ delivered here in Serbia (from junkyard)and no more problems with broken gears.
That's the main reason i would like to upgrade to s,v70 cluster....plus it looks better.
The best thing is that is just plug & play...without modifications of any kind.
There are three versions of odometer gears for VDO cluster???
I thought that there is only one version of both gears(bigger and smaller one).
If i can't find a cluster from '97 or '98 i will need to replace those gears.
The main problem is that i don't have part# for the cluster and because of that we don't know if it's pulled from '99+ or '97 and '98.
They all look the same visually.
Edit:
Just visited scandix.de...there are 2 versions of small gears...with 12 and 15 teeth for VDO...and 1 for Yazaki cluster.
I don't know which gear i have untill i dismantle the cluster.

Mileage is stored in the cluster with or without working mechanical odometer.
The difference is that pulses are running the motor for mechanical one....and on digital....pulses are converted by cluster to digital display.
Something like mechanical and electronic relay. They have the same purpose but they just looks different.
Car have M4.4 from the factory just like s,v70 and fully OBDII for every module in the car except ECC.
Guy on volvospeed claims that he run it for years in his '96 850.

interesting that the mileage is stored in the cluster. thanks for the detailed explanation.
if you have the VDO cluster you have to pull it and wait a few days (had mine within 4 days) or buy both versions. that sucks. I think the 15 gear unit is more common because when I ordered my first gear for my 96 4 years ago there was just the 15 tooth gear available if I remember correctly.

The problem is that both cars are used daily in the family and i can't wait few days for delivery.
One day is not a problem...but few days are.
If i need to buy both versions of gears that would be a lot easier for me.
We'll see.
