Hey everyone,

I am getting ready to swap the PCV system that I pulled from my 98 NA into my 96 NA. Both cars are auto trans.

I know I will have to get a new intake manifold gasket, but online retailer's rep is saying the unit I have (the main box, and the four main hoses, two to engine block and one going into the head and one going over the throttle body) are not correct for a 96. I can't figure out why, they look exactly the same.

What would the reasons be for a difference between a 96 PCV box and main hoses and a 98 PCV main box and hoses, assuming both are non-turbo and automatic?

Thanks.

Can't think why either. I do recall there was a change I think in the PCV box but I think that was earlier than 96.

The 2 hoses to the block I believe are the same, as it the one to the head. That leaves the breather hose to the flame trap. If they look the same then they are. Is the engine the original?

Check pcv box part number. There are 2 kind of pcv box...with different part numbers for '96 & '97 850.
My '97 have exactly the same setup like s,v70 from '97 and '98.

What misha said.

There are two different boxes, each takes slightly different shaped hoses for the little side hoses. However it is not true that they only fit specific years. As long as you have the right combo of small hoses and box, you can put it on any NA. The engine blocks are all the same.

So, interesting update...

After doing a more thorough review of the current 96 set up, it appears the main hose to the air intake/flame trap area is different. There is a little line running to the vaccum tree that was not on the 98. Also, there seems to be no small vaccum line coming out of the passenger side end of the intake manifold like the 98 had. I guess at the very least, that main hose setup is different in the 96.

When I got this car last year, I just assumed the PCV was plugged and pulled the dipstick out about 1 inch to allow relief of pressure. I knew I would get around to it “eventually” but needed to do more important items first. I don’t know why I didn’t do this before, but I did the glove test last weekend. It was sucking in pretty hard at the oil filler cap even with the dipstick pulled. When I put the dipstick in all the way, it almost sucked the glove into the engine. It seemed to have as much intake suction as my 98 did on the first day I replaced the PCV system, which was about 90% clogged in the bottom black box port and had smoking dipstick and blew up the glove like a ballon prior to the repair.

I don’t have any maintenance records on the car, and it’s 24 years old. I know the PCV system is an interval/must-do in many circumstances, but this one seems to be working properly. I was thinking I’d let it go for now and commit to doing the glove test every 3,000 miles or so. The car has 82,000 original miles.

The emissions sticker under the hood will likely reflect those novelties. Would be interested to see it for comparison. :)
