I was adjusting my rear view mirror yesterday and the metal
stalk broke in 1/2 . Part is still in the socket in the rearview mirror, the other part is in the ceiling fixture mount
My question is, how/or can I replace this myself? If not, what do you
think the cost of this would be or where can I buy a replacement mirror.
Thanks,
D.I.

remove the lenses on both sides of the dome light with a screw driver. Underneath that you will find two torx bits.. remove them and you will then see the mirror attachement.
This is also removed with larger torx screws. two of them.
If you only have the non electrical unit which does not have the automatic dimmer you can get them for 20 or more.. the other type is closer to 50.

Same thing happened to me tonight. Ironic thing was I had the car being serviced today, I wish the damn thing had beoke last night, then I could have had the guy fix this.
Thanks for the tip above, took me 5 secs to find your solution on the internet, 5 minutes to remove the broken piece. Now I've got to get the part.
Think they have it at a Volvo Dealership? The guy I go to is a private shop and not exactly around the corner and I'd like to get this fixed quickly.

Look on eBay. I see the basic mirror there all the time.

If you need to replace it, go for the autodimmer upgrade. VERY nice add.
I just wish I could get the feature for the mirrors outside the car!
( We have a pile of trucks around here that have headlights right at eye level...)

Yeah, these snap after they get old ( 5-7 years) and if the weather is cold outside.
I have bought used mirrors but for the 20 exrtra dollars or so buy a new one, they all get "tight" to adjust over the years and even a "good" used one will not move as easily as a new one will.
They rust inside the ball and the metal becomes brittle

Does the auto dimmer dim enough for you guys? I've found it to be not dark enough ('99 S80).

The newer ones suck.matthew1 wrote:Does the auto dimmer dim enough for you guys? I've found it to be not dark enough ('99 S80).
I never even sat in a GEN1 Volvo equipped with an auto dimming mirror.
However in most, if not all cases, a "manual" mirror will get darker when flipped than an Auto dimmer will.
I always wonder why some owners can be so lazy they can't flip a mirror instead of having an another (Volvo) accessory that can fail
(and eventually will)!

To me, it's not a matter of laziness ( or laxieness
) so much as safety.
Like I said before, I get blinded constantly by the overabundance of 4x4's in this town.
Using the autodim helps me keep an eye the jokers who can't drive'em.
Just like the defensive driving time I spend on the bike, if it looks like someone is
gonna do something stupid, then the odds are good that they really will!
A mirror that takes care of itself is one less thing I have to deal with
while avoiding idiots with cell's attached to their distracted heads.
+1 on the convenience feature from me. It works quite well.
