OK, I did search for posts to change the shifter bulb out and didn't really get an answer to what I needed. I got to the bulb ok (while fixing the shifter position micro-switch) and have the bulb in hand but for the life of me, can't find anything on what to replace it with. This is obviously not a stock parts store bulb as it is soldred into the holder. I actually broke it trying to pull it out but no loss since it was burned out anyhow.
So, bottom line, where in the heck do I get a replacement bulb. I don't want ot reassemble my console without fixing the bulb but hate driving around with console parts laying all over the floorboard.
And, why on earth is there a 5 pound piece of lead encased in rubber sitting under the rear of the console. I can fathom no purpose for this other than, and this is a stretch, that it might be there to dampen some resonant vibration in that section of the body.
Thanks for the bulb help in advance
Doug

Cant see it being much different although I could be wrong . The bulb for mine was of a type Id never seen before so I ended up at the dealer for it .
Hope it helps you some .

Solutech was fast - I was trying to find his post!
Keep in mind that he drives on the other side of the road so some mirror imaging is in order.

lol glad you didnt say the wrong side as thats what you lot drive on
Just kidding . The bulb should come out of the connector though . Quick wiggle separated the bulb housing from the connector . Its mounted in a black plastic housing so I suspect you may of pulled the bulb out of that .
Any chance of a piccy so we know what we are looking at ? .

It appears that the bulb is the same for 850's and S/V/XC/C 70's (first generation). and looks like this (by the way, it's the same bulb for the cig lighter):

Although a part number is not mentioned in VADIS for the 70 series, for 850's it is #1363149-4 (also #30710781 in other places) and is listed for both types of cars as a 1.2 watt with description as "special." In other words I'm afraid you're not going to find it in a regular car parts store or at radio shack. If someone does, please let me know. Put 1363149 in the search box at http://www.foreigncarpartsonline.com/ and you'll find it for $10.30. IPD sells it for $9.00 at http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?strPa ... &V_ID=4546
$8.55 at Eeuro: http://www.eeuroparts.com/productdetail ... &code=9442
Not sure what it costs at the dealer.

I love having you guys on this board.
I've only been to Europe a couple of times in my life - Germany, Austria, Northern France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland on the first trip 20 years or so ago and then Rome through the Corinth Canal to the Greek Islands and on to to Athens on a cruise last year.
Sadly I've not been to England - I do want to go.
I am always reminded of what my father in law says, "If you don't like the Brits, you just don't like people".
He was over there in the '40s as a tail gunner in a B-17 and we got to send him back 10 years or so ago as a Christmas present - I think he loved every moment of the trip.

The photo posted by MadeInJapan is it. Notice the little copper wire extending to the metal tab. That wire is actually hard connected to the bulb (x2) and soldered to the tab.
I'll try those link though, thanks. Though it kills me to pay $10 for a 50 cent bulb. Oddly, the rear ashtray bulb does remove from the holder and was replaceable with a regular bulb.
No ideas on the lead anchor ?
Thanks all for the bulb help.
Doug

This is an old post but I need to update the crowd re Shifter Bulb.
* The Gear Shift Light Bulb (PRND3L) is a special Volvo bulb as mentioned above, but it is expensive!
However, I was stuck on Sunday and had to get the job done, so I used Radio Shack 272-1092 with success.
Rotate the bad bulb sideway back and forth to break it from its base.
Look down the base, there are 2 tiny holes, thread the Radio Shack bulb wires through the base, then loop the wire in the hole of the spade connector.
Just make sure the 2 wires don't touch each other.
Believe it or not, the Radio Shack bulb is as good as the factory bulb.

I did not take photo but just made this diagram to illustrate what needs to be done:
- Twist the old bulb CW and CCW many times, it will break off the base.
- Thread the new Radio Shack bulb 2 wires down the holes and loop them around the spade connector as shown (yellow lines).
- I left the Radio Shack bulb sticking out a bit (1-2 mm) but I guess you can leave the bulb flushed with the edge of the base.
- As long as the 2 wires don't touch each other, it is fine.
Done is 2 minutes!
This is what happens when I am stuck on a Sunday afternoon with all stores closed, the console was taken apart and I need the car the next day. Some ghetto fix but it turned out perfect. Volvo Bulb = $10, Radio Shack bulb = $1.
Needless to say, the Radio Shack bulb was the winner!
