1998 V70 AT camshaft position, no crank

All the dash lights come on when at KP2. When I turn the key further, to the cranking position, nothing happens (no noise at all)!
Will check the battery voltage once I find my multi-meter and will report back,

It sounds like a electrical failure of some kind. Starter problems won't affect running, so ignition switch or main battery cables/connections are the suspects.

Battery voltage was at 13.4.
I did change the "J" fuse as both sides of one tong (the one labelled "30") had a bit of a black/burnt color to it near the fuse housing.
Again, no noise at all when I turn the key to crank the motor, but the dash lights do come on. This is on the automatic '98 V70.
I am clueless on what to do next!

There were a few sparks when I connected the negative cable to the battery. Normal?

Get a piece of wire stripped on both ends, then put your key in KP2, and try the jump start connection under the kidney fuse box.

This bypasses the key feed, but still needs the starter relay and PnP to be functional, and should start cranking.

Sparking at negative normal, especially if you left your door open.

Hi abscate,
I tried the jump starting with the wire as shown in the above photos, but again nothing happened, even with a helper turning the key to the KP3 position.
I took out the ignition sensor from the '98 silver Volvo (std trans) and inserted the bottom half of sensor then screwed everything back in. At least the bells chimed when I left the key in the ignition to perform the jump starting. There was no noise with the initial sensor. The battery was down to 12.5 volts.
Any suggestions on what to try next? Other than find a new sensor!

You need to do the same jump down at the starter

Look for the thin blue wire on the starter , pull it off and apply 12 volts to that terminal. See if the starter has any life left in it

I'm in the process of disconnecting the wires attached to the starter. Thought I would use a small wire brush to clean up the connections. After I finish this, I will reconnect everything (had to remove the idle air unit to give a bit more room to reach the starter) and try the jump start as you suggest above. I'll keep you posted.

If you make up that same wire I had above I think you could clip that to the small “ blue wire “ terminal on the starter solenoid , then touch the other end to the battery positive.

That sbypassing everything , and if that doesn’t crank , the starter is dead

Those same clips are also useful for holding burning rosemary, sage, or other ceremonial plants.
