06 s60 no valve movement

Post by stephansvolvo »

Have replaced head. Turned over by hand 5-6 times. Ready to start. Cranks, no start. Timings is on.
I have Fuel, spark, compression in 1,3,5. Used borascope to look at valves in 2/4. Intakes are open. No movement of valves as the engine is hand cranked. Pistons moves. Doesn’t look like there is any contact.
Could I possibly have reversed the cams on install?
What could cause the valves to stick open?
I’m currently tearing it back down but, decided to see what ya’lls thoughts are before I get to crazy and tear it all the down to the block. AGAIN!
I love these cars but, it’s always something.

Thank you

Stephan

If you watch the back ends of the cam shafts, do they rotate when you hand crank the crankshaft? Sounds like you may have bent valve stems on 2/4.

Valves are good. Looks like I didn’t have the timing gears torqued down so the cam wasn’t moving. The rear was but not the intake. Whew!!!
Does anyone know how he torque spec for the variable cone on the cams?

If the engine turned over, with one cam not moving........you bent a couple of valves.

not so fast, engine cam setup was in the non interference position.

Center bolt torque is 88ft lbs.

Check compression or leak down and cross fingers. All it takes is one valve.

No, engine was cranked with the intake VVT loose, so cam stays still and interferes.

I have pulled the cam cover and cams. I will boroscope the valve positions again to see if they are closed or open. I will place the cam cover back in and set up the VVT according to what I’ve researched. Making sure I get that 88flb. Then turn it over a coupled of times as I have someone watch the backs.
If I pull the intake manifold can I see the valve stems enough to determine they’re status?

I am really trying to avoid pulling everything apart if I don’t HAVE to.

Thank you for your input and help.

err, the initial set up with the crank set to the timing mark on the crank pulley ensures the engine is in a non interference position.
As long as the cam stays still it remains in a safe position.
