In my case the car would drive fine until the transmission got warm. If I was lucky enough to be on the high way and just cruising everything was fine. But if I got stuck in traffic where a lot of shifting was required it would soon go into limp mode. The real indicator was reading the codes though.

Thank you for your write up and the tips on doing this without dropping the subframe. I have a '98 V70 X/C and a P0740 code for the lock-up solenoid. I checked the resistances of all my solenoids this past weekend hoping I had a wire issue instead of a bad solenoid. No such luck. The lock-up solenoid measured 160 ohms no matter which way I manipulated the wiring. I also have one of the other shift solenoids (S2 if I remember right) that was reading just over 15 ohms while the other was about 12 ohms. Since I'm going to have to "go in" anyway, I figure I will replace S1, S2, and the lock-up solenoids. Being I have a '98, does anyone know if the numbers listed at the beginning write up apply to my car? Also, thanks for the tips/link to Trans Parts; awesome prices. Thanks in advance for any info!

Try emailing them and see what they say. They were pretty helpful when I talked to them.

Wow this is a Great thread. The gasket problem makes me wonder if I could just put that material through a laser cutter.
