Once a month , the hood goes up and you check all over the engine for leaks of oil , coolant, power steering fluid, and ATF.

In the next three months, replace that ATF using the Gibbons or drain and fill method. Once a week for three weeks until most of the ATF is fresh.

If it been since 2008 for the cap, rotor , and plugs, those are due pretty soon but can wait for now

You are probably coming up on your third timing belt interval on a 1998. It depends on both time and miles. It isn’t critical, rush out and do tomorrow if it is overdue, but needs to be done in next month

Interval is 7 years/70k miles
Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but what’s the ATF?

I think this is going to turn out to be a good car.
I think it’s going to be as well. I drove it two another city last night, 4 hours round trip. It handles REALLY well. For some reason the acceleration seems better or like, smoother, than my old s70 and the brakes are definitely newer. No weird noises or anything like that. Honesty it felt like I could’ve almost been driving a brand new car. And the AC works too! Just a bonus, but an unexpected one that kind of surprised me. I really love it so far and I’m going to do my best to keep it in good condition so I’ll have it a long time. There’s just something about driving these s70’s. They’re really fun to drive…they’re sporty but feel like a luxury sedan and a really safe tank, all at the same time.

Chuck W wrote: 12 Apr 2023, 05:19 That looks to have a persistent P0455 code. Seeing as they "found no leaks", I'm guessing it would be above the tank. It's not a real issue, but annoying. My wife's '97 GLT had a P0455 code for 3-4 years until I finally traced it to a chewed up hose on top of the tank.

It looks like it was maintained to some extent, so that's nice.

We can work out a time for me to look it over here in the near future.

Glad you're happy with it.!
Thank you Chuck! I’ll text you sometime soon to set something up. I feel pretty good about the car, but would definitely feel a lot better about it after you gave it a once over. :)

I put up a Vovo terminology glossary around 15 years ago that has a bunch more you might find helpful.

I'll give my typical advice to people (seemingly) new to working on old Volvos: Get the Haynes manual for the 1998-2000 S/V/C70. It has most basic and intermediate procedures and even some advanced ones, torque values, pictures, and more. Mine is hard cover and is written in British English, so some words and terms are different. Maybe the softcover is in American English? Pays for itself in one use.

Plan to replace the ATF as valuable preventative maintenance to keep the car shifting well and the transmission safe. My 2000 V70 had a weird power drop out at 44 mph which was likely an indication that the ATF was old. I wasn't able to change the ATF for 20k miles and now it is in crisis, struggling to engage in gears, etc. I hope that a flush will save my transmission.

Be sure to get the right fluid. Four-speed automatic (AW4) requires Dexron III and Mercon. Five-speed automatic (AW5) requires "Volvo gearbox oil (1161540-8)" which I'm pretty certain is JWS 3309 spec fluid such as Aisin T-IV.

Here are the procedures from my notes:
MIJ flush - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8767
Clip reinstall - viewtopic.php?p=234102#p234102
Haynes 7B-2 has the procedure.

Kesha brought this by over the weekend, and it's a pretty nice car. Needs a couple small things, but nothing major stood out.

The only code I pulled was a P0410 code for the SAS. The pump is running, but there may be an issue with the check valve or vac lines. Didn't have much time to dig into it.

She does need a replacement for the lower dash panel under the glove box. The one in the car is broken and won't stay in place.
