Actually its not if you look to right of the orange tensioner the bolt hole is there as the tensioner and pulley are on a lever, so the pulley is pushed up against belt by the spring tensioner, but the blocks and holes are identical, I’m stripping both types down so I’ll properly measure! First to be sure!

Thanks Erikv but i read so many of his posts and I can’t find it anywhere!

Searched his name and timing belt and pulled 7 pages of comments but still couldn’t find it, thanks anyway, I appreciate it!

Hm. Ok, if what you say is correct, then it would be interesting to see both blocks with the pulleys removed. As you mentioned, someone else said you may have to grind off some metal for this to work. From your picture of the earlier block it looks like there is a flange in the block under the tensioner pulley. There may be a hole but I can't see it without the older tensioner out the way!

Either way I always love hearing of this type of project and it is always good info to exchange as parts get harder to find.

Look in post #29 on https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/doug ... st-2544160 Dougy says " .. might have to modify Timing belt tensioner mounting stopper if you like to use newer style tensioner depending on the year of the 2.3l block like i did."

So that's what he did - newer style mechanical tensioner onto a 2.3 block, not replacing hydraulic where there was a mechanical.

I dont remember seeing the holes for the hydraulic tensioner when I swapped a 98 mechanical tensioner B5254T, so I stuck with the mechanical one despite liking the hydraulic more.
Maybe it was hiding behind the rear timing cover though

I could see how probably this might work. The threaded hole almost directly above the crank pulley is where the hydraulic tensioner are bolts into. The hole where the mechanical tensioner bolts into is the upper right bolt for the hydraulic tensioner and the lower mounting point is in that hole just to the lower left f the mechanical pulley in Goupils picture above.

The only way to confirm that is to strip and compare 2 blocks or offer the hydraulic parts up to a mechanical unit and see if things line up??
