I want to trickle charge our son's 06 XC70. I know you can jump start the car from under the hood, but can you also trickle charge the battery from there as well to save having to pull the crap out the load bay.

If you can, I assume you connect the +ve to the marked connection in the engine bay, and do you use any ground for the -ve as I do in my P80?

Well I have used the instructions for jump starting the car and connected the +ve to the connector under the hood and the -ve to the alternator bracket, again as per the handbook. Powered up the trickle charger and nothing went bang so I guess that is a bonus! Trickle charger seems happy so I guess I may find out tomorrow how it has done. Car may not need it but it has been sitting for about 6 weeks or so unlocked in the garage. Hopefully all should be good. Worst case it just doesn't charge the battery.

Depends on your charger. My Stanley smart charger turns on to a full charging cycle every few seconds because of all the capacitance in electronics.

Should work fine. I attached a spare battery with jump leads to the connections under the bonnet (hood) when I was fitting a new battery and it was fine

It appears to have charged the battery and gone into maintenance mode now. So seems to have worked. I will have to get it moved on Thursday so we will find out if everything is good!
