2004 XC70 Drive Train Removal

Post by cuhfs »

Any ideas are appreciated. I've been trying to remove the drivetrain. I separated the front from the haldex but the rear connection seems impossible to separate. Banged it, penetrating oil, etc. no success. Any tricks or Ideas??

Thank you. I'll look at this again. If there are only 6 holes in the back of the connection then I don't understand how the bolt can press the driveshaft out since the bolt will run thru. Perhaps there are extra holes that do not go all the way thru, that I did not notice.. I Will inspect it again and report back.

Strike it gently with a brass drift several times at several locations in between the bolt holes. I’ll repeat, be gentle and persistent as. You don’t want to damage the CV joints inside. If you’ve soaked it with penetrating oil you just need to break the rust bond. The cv joint will probably come apart but you can clean and reassemble it after. What is your plan? Fluid and filter change or removal of an inoperative AWD?

The flange has two threaded holes that you can use to push the CV joint out. Upon separation clean the mating surfaces good and coat with grease lightly to prevent this issue from happening again in the future.

On the rear CV I use an air hammer with a long pointy bit and use a socket head cap screw to drive it, have freed some pretty rusty ones that way. Be careful to not damage the Haldex parts while you are in there. Remove that DEM while you are messing around under there; be careful with the connectors. For pics showing how to use the air hammer see viewtopic.php?t=98916.

Also this thread for general tips. viewtopic.php?t=98306.

Plan is only removal not replacement. Car is used merely as a local runner and need to remove and fix gas tank leak. No need for AWD anymore. Has almost 300K miles on it.

If never reinstalling the driveshaft then remove the DEM fuse in the trunk. That will keep the tiny oil pump from constantly running.
