a single click is usually the starter bendix solenoid gone bad,Mr. Detail wrote: 07 Jun 2026, 11:43 Hello Gentlemen-
Went to start up my good 'ole V70 for church this morning and all I got was a clicking sound.
I recently replaced the battery back in February with a new Interstate one and the alternator
was replaced a few thousand miles back in 2025.
Do you think this sounds like a starter motor issue? Since I bought the car back in 2017, I have
never replaced the starter. She has 225k miles on her right now.
multiple clicking is not the starter.
Read voltage at idle, 14+V alternator is good.
After turning engine off...if battery drops from 12.5v to below 12v in 30 minutes its got a bad cell, it can't hold the charge.

Jonesg-
When you say "read voltage at idle, 14+V alternator is good" am I checking/reading the voltage at the battery terminals or at the alternator itself?

read v at the battery terminals, thats the charge voltage.Mr. Detail wrote: 08 Jun 2026, 05:41 Jonesg-

also, in certain cases it can be high, maybe 17v+, that woud indicate the voltage regulator mounted to the alternator is bad, that over charge will cook the battery.
if the v is low it makes sense to take a reading at the power distribution terminals in the engine bay to eliminate bad cables.

Last post on this topic as I still don't know what to fix if anything.
1. Overnight trickle charged the battery from 11.94V to 13.8V this afternoon.
2. Started and idled the car and checked the alternator for voltage after cleaning up the contact wires and it read 13.96V.
3. Waited 45 minutes and just went back out and checked the voltage on the battery and it read 13.3V.
A .5V drop in voltage is not much and enough to warrant that a cell in the new battery is faulty.
Since the voltage at the alternator read 13.96V, virtually 14V what "jonesg" said is good not sure what to replace if anything.
Hate to start driving around and have the car just die on me again.
Thx for all of your responses!

now test for parasitic drain. something simple like the glove compartment light can draw it down.Mr. Detail wrote: 08 Jun 2026, 16:59 Last post on this topic as I still don't know what to fix if anything.

theres lots of videos on how to.
you might want to consider a lithium jump pack in case you get caught and/or carry jump cable.
