S60 AWD 2002 Rear shocks

Post by therdes »

I need new rear shocks on my 2002 S60 AWD ( 190,000 km) Is replacing the shocks a DIY job? Will I need a coil spring compressor to do this job? Can anyone provide tips on the procedure to do this job?

Thanks,

Being a AWD you have Nivomat (self-leveling) shocks which are expensive an only made by/for Volvo, you are sort of stuck on what you can replace with. From what I understand there are no other alternatives. It's however not a difficult job to do:

Hi MadeInJapan,

Thanks for your excellent response. The PDF file is very helpful. Can you provide the torque specs for the bolts on the bottom and top of the shocks. Thanks very much!

If you don't know the conversion from Nm's to ft lbs this on-line converter should help: http://www.onlineconverter.co.uk/index. ... ors&cat=12 Angle tightening means just that- after your initial torquing you go so many degrees.

Mi Made in Japan. I replaced my shocks yesterday....it took less than 1 hr per wheel. FYI, on this model they are not Nivomats, just plain Sachs shocks (CAN $140 ea. @Autopartsway.ca) . I found a website with step by step photos of how to replace the shocks on this model - very helpful!; see the link attached from another Volvo help website....

Thanks for posting back!
Great write-up! Glad it wasn't too bad. Thought all AWD shocks were Nivomats...learn something everyday.

Hello therdes, 8 months ago you posted questions about your rear shocks. Had the fronts been done? Was one or both leaking? Love to hear details. Thanks, George

Just an FYI, but my '02 XC's rear shocks were also standard old Sachs tubes. Same PN as the '02 AWD V70 and S60 as well.

Cheers,

I have a 2001 S60 FWD. Is the procedure to change the shocks any different, and do I need the self leveling shocks mentioned prior in this post? Thanks!

Any tips for getting at the top nuts on the AWD wagons? Wish my V70 was as easy as the S60 in that regard. :(
