1989 240DL - Is it possible to rebuild a Bosch starter?

Can anyone identify what the small push connector type wire is?

From what I can see in the crappy picture in the Haynes manual, that wire is a ground. which I don't really need since I made a better ground wire right to the alternator mount bolt.

The problem I'm having now is the newly rebuilt alternator I put in isn't working. I think the problem is at the starter.
Is the wire to the alternator supposed to be connected to the same post on the starter as the wire from the battery?
I'm thinking so cause I have the wire from the battery on the top post on the starter and the wire going to the alternator on the bottom post & it's not working.

The starter works fine but the alternator is being a pain in the you know what.

That is a ground (earth) but most have been discarded in favour of a direct connection as you have done.

The alternator does connect to the same post as the battery lead on the starter.
