Examine all the numbers on the thing. go to car-parts.com and look around. If you can find a junk yard close to you go there w/old ECU to match the numbers. Ebay the same, look to match numbers. I am thinking the ECU from Volvo would really set you back a lot. A used exact match should be OK.

You can't change over a ECU with another used unit on these models (post '99) without changing other matched components.

However you can swap the old ECU with a new one at the dealer without those other components (and at great cost).

We had a discussion about this about 2 months ago here and I can't recall exactly what the other parts were but I recall going over to Volvospeed and many of the members chimed in about it. One of the things I recall was ETM and another was the ignition section (transponder in keys and ignition section that accepts signal)

Seems your car knows you've swapped the ECU and the battery cable reset is fooling it but only until the next start cycle.

Did you fiddle with any of the items above before getting the no-start?

Well i didn't swap the ECU i swapped the TPS. The whole no start issue just randomly started while i was on break one day. I am thinking it is something to do with the key/ignition switch the more i read on it.

I was having the same symptoms with the missing ets, cel , and oil lights. may have found the problem. there is a common ground wire that is held in place by the passenger side hood latch. took it off , cleaned it up , reconnected and she started first try. like nothing was ever wrong. Only because I removed the entire box surrounding the computers did I just happen to see this corroded wire, although you do not have to remove the cover to access it. Hope this helps...

Thanks Nick. These fixes are the the best to know about, the kind you'd never think of in the normal troubleshooting process.

Reminds me of a quirky problem (one of many) with my 245 wagon, where the windshield wipers started coming on while the headlights were on...with the great help of members on the brick forum, it turned out being a ground wire connection (just a wire screwed to the floor) under the carpet, padding, etc. in front of the shifter (it was a manual trans)...I would have never thought to look there...but it was one of three spots on that car that were suggested . One was the taillight, the next was a body ground behind the battery (had to remove to access), and then the hidden screw under the carpet. I each case I removed the screw, hit the spot with my flap disc (just a touch), cleaned the wire connector (carefully inspecting it, then smearing some dielectric grease on the bare spot , the connector, then using a fresh washer and screw.

Grounds can cause mysterious problems!

Hi I have em all spare: ECU, ETM from 2001 V70. If you have VIDA installed onto your laptop you can reprogram it to your VIN.
Drop me a note if you're interested and we'll talk about shipping etc...
