Serpentine belt does not fit Topic is solved

A while back (Jan 2016) one of the vendors shipped me a Contitech belt that was labeled on the outer package as a 1743 but the belt inside was labeled 1741. It wouldn't fit on. I asked the vendor about it and they told me that they had received a batch of belts with the wrong size but in the right package.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

That's the thing - I've done belts before (mostly on my Land Rover) and its always been pretty straightforward. I look at all of the pulleys and the belt is sitting on all of them properly and the tensioner is pulled back and locked with a pin (I tried going past that point and it moves only a little bit, not enough to make a huge difference). I am going to the the wheel off and access the crank to make sure its sitting on it properly. Btw I've tried going onto the idler pulley last - same thing, about an inch too short.

How much the idler changes the belt path is a function of how big a sector it subtends, but small changes are important! Get every last bit of tension on that idler.

This is an informative post. Did you eyeball that the belt itself says 1743 on it?

How many MVSers does it take to change a serp belt ... :)

I don't believe this! The belt says 1740 but the package says 1743!
