In the meantime, the "Purge valve is located underneath the air duct" picture gives me the creeps: a long metal tool very close to both the positive and negative poles of the battery, yikes!!! Whenever I am under the hood, I cover the battery with a thick rag.
Right, I haven't pulled it from my '98 yet, but be not afraid. Unhook the negative side and tuck it away as to not be able to touch the terminal.
Unhook the positive.
It would be a hindrance to leave in anyway.
You should be comfortable in the area you are working.
