In the meantime, the "Purge valve is located underneath the air duct" picture gives me the creeps: a long metal tool very close to both the positive and negative poles of the battery, yikes!!! Whenever I am under the hood, I cover the battery with a thick rag.
The battery is easily taken out of the equation by two 10mm nuts, and a finger tight clip.

Right, I haven't pulled it from my '98 yet, but be not afraid. Unhook the negative side and tuck it away as to not be able to touch the terminal.
Unhook the positive.
It would be a hindrance to leave in anyway.

You should be comfortable in the area you are working.

Great write up!
Not to derail thread...

Asking this for my friend's '98 s70 with 0442code.

Anyone in New York City know if this code can fail her at inspection?
Will try to do all in this post, but probably won't have time by end of month (inspection time).
Thanks

This is a great thread and I'm grateful to all who have contributed to it.
It looks like much of the information is for the '98 S/V70 models. Does anybody know if the canister vent valve is present behind the driver's wheel well liner on the '97 and earlier 850 models too? Thanks!

I have replaced about every hose with the exemption of the shutoff valve. I made a smoker off some plans i found and wonder where is a good place to start smoking the evap system.

Robert made a great video on connecting a smoke source here:

I believe this is true for all early P2s, then the canister moved to the passenger rear wheel with the superior 1999 year and ME7

Great thread, wish Google prioritized it higher.

Is there a parts list corresponding to the volvo evap diagram? I'm particularly interested in:

What is part #22 between cannister and purge valve, it looks like a filter? Also, what are the parts between the purge valve and crankcase, mine looks like a fairly simple hose that is nearly disintegrated but perhaps not yet leaking, and I can't find a corresponding Volvo part. Is it anything more than a hose?

For the stop valve, when the cannister is the rectangular box front left wheel well, is it always located in the same place (mine is a 98 V70)? Is there any after-market part to replace this one, or is is reasonably safe to purchase this used? Is the stop valve hose call the 'j-hose', which you've replaced with 3 ft of 3/8ths brake hose?

Thanks again.

I have checked everything on mine so far but the shutoff valve you would think a large evaporative would be obvious but not so far.

The ' large leak ' code is a bit misleading. That code is set for a certain set of responses to the EVAP test cycle, not all of which are ' large leaks'

I'll try to find that cycle and link it to this great thread
