I did in fact leave mine out, ran over 100,000 miles with no leaks. It's not the correct way to do it, but it did work just fine missing one bolt.Knowprblm 97 wrote: ↑14 Apr 2021, 18:30 Volvo 850 1994 n/a. Snapped water pump bolt flush to the head. Drilling bolt left oval hole as drill bit wandered during drilling. I'm left with oval shaped hole where the bolt was. What is the best way to repair? Steel putty or weld

I know that this position of the bolt on our cars makes the following techniques not that applicable, but they are very informative. I like both the door hinge screw guide and the homemade bolt guide. Check it out.

JB Weld is one of the greatest inventions of the modern era or at least of the 20th century. There's no situation that a little JB Weld can't improve, if not completely remedy.

The Socket head guides are a neat solution if you have a drill press or a lathe to to make them.
Eye balling to drill the Socket Head straight will not cut it.

Yes for most of us we would use a drill press. One of this guy's videos shows how to use a press to make such a socket bolt drill guide. Too bad I have neither press nor lathe.

Thank you for replies to my oval drilled out hole. I wound up tapping the hole out and got a 8 mm bolt to snug up the water pump. 3 weeks with no leaks!!
I just wanted to say our bolt did not snap on the way out, but on the way in. We purchased the asin water pump online but did not compare it to the original volvo pump. Our mistake was using the old bolts which were 1/4" too long for this pump. The new water pump was thinner allowing the old bolt to bottom out in the block before coming to rest on the water pump. Moral of story is to always use new bolts
