1998 V70 - PCV stuff out, now what?
I've read posts on here that maybe some parts could be cleaned or heater hose used. Can y'all comment on that or post the link?
Also, on the engine side, there's nothing really in those holes. I'd expect there is more to clean and that it would be more fouled. Am I missing something? (Pics below)
And for record keeping, this is the PCV off shoot from the RMS seal leak topic viewtopic.php?p=649095#p649095

a cracked hose and a clogged port of the box sure is a sign of neglected care by the previous owner.

At that age anything rubber and plastic is spent, replace all you can so you don’t have to do it again in 3 months.

Thanks for the comments. Anything specific on these questions?

So you do have the replacement kit / parts, correct ? It comes with everything you need, except for the intake gasket ( I think ).
You could clean out the PCV box itself, but it comes in the kit, and at this point, you might as well replace it.
Clean the block ports as best you can with a piece of wire and a solvent soaked shop towel.
No on heater hose !

For the three smaller hoses that connect to the plastic box, you must buy Volvo branded parts. Aftermarket will turn to mush way too soon.
For the long pipe/hose you can DIY instead of buying the expensive Volvo part but what I said in the other post is do NOT use heater hose. Heater hose will turn to mush in there. Same do not use silicone - it will sweat oil badly. Use fuel line or some other, oil-rated hose. 5/8 will fit. Here is an old. post about it, see the post by user tryingbe, but the post has dead links now viewtopic.php?t=77278
Oil trap. 99% of the time, there is no need to replace the oil trap. It is hollow and durable. If it is clogged, clean it. If you must replace it, just buy a cheap one, it is hard plastic and there is no history of the cheapies breaking.
Breather hose from the IM nipple, use generic rubber vacuum hose, it will last longer and is cheaper and easier to work with than the Volvo part with the hard plastic and rubber nipple. See this post and re-do all of your vacuum lines: viewtopic.php?t=65002

glad you chimed in for several reasons. I was thinking from your prior post says heater hose is OK (maybe edit that post to reflect NOT heater hose? it is a common result in the google search) viewtopic.php?t=74530#:~:text=Use%20abo ... ter%20hose
took a quick look at the other links and will need to digest them. I like the idea of using generic 5/8 oil rated hose and some 90deg fittings.
thank you for this help.

Yeah, originally the old posts all said use heater hose but in the process we learned that using heater hose is not good. Way too many posts to edit them all, unfortunately.
When I said "the other post" I was referring to this one from the other day viewtopic.php?p=649095#p649095, not to the old posts.

If you have long term plans for the car replace all the rubber stuff. It’s tight down there and you will chafe non standard hoses and get leaks over years.
The PCv tear down is a 4 hour job so it’s $150 of your time , compare to cheap parts costs
That block looks nice and clean!!

I have a couple of conflicting objectives on this project unfortunately.
1) I have to leave town in 5 days on the 1400 mi drive to bring this to my kid in Berkeley so shipping time for parts no longer works.
2) the kid will have the car until some other car appears (hopefully another Prius considering CA $6 gas)
3) now that I had it apart its not too hard so I won't mind doing it again
4) the RMS is the real culprit because of the driveway staining and potential oil loss and resulting engine damage. Hopefully this PCV service will address that. Would have rather just done the RMS but I get how even a new seal could leak if the PCV system isn't addressed.
5) I'll go with what I can get my hands on for this fix and clean/reinstall what I can't get locally. Now that I had it apart its less scary (#3 above)
6) if this PCV doesn't stop the RMS leak, I may just let the kid use my Prius until I get it sorted but I'm scared that my Catalytic converter will get stolen in the Bay area.
...off to plat with oil soaked fittings and brake cleaner :-/
