Engine oil

Post by fields 100 »

Hi all,
I have 2019 T5 Momentum. The under hood tag as well as the manual say 5W30. The dealer says 0W20. Which way should I go? Thanks.

If it's under any sort of warranty I'd go with what the owner's manual says. If not, dealer's recommendation.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I think for 2.0 4 cyl engines Volvo originally recommended 5w/30. Then they run into some problems and issued TSB reccomending 0w-20. If unavailable they were recommending 0w-30 or 5w-30. I think Castrol was the preferred brand.

It's back to 0W20? Probably their legal working with engineering to cover their behinds. Unfortunately the consumer is the test bed for these ultra high stress 2.0 motors going against the limits of physics. Use 5K or 6 month intervals whichever is first.

Our 2020 Tiguan has 0W20 for North America while South America it's 0 or 5W40. Being the VW 2.0 Miller Cycle motors are really noisy I just purchase 0W20 from dealer for warranty and leave out one quart for the Castrol 5W50 and now Swepco 306 15W40 which is even quieter, smoother and less oil consumption between changes.

During break in period or motor rebuild the 0W20 is okay but after 50K miles or out of warranty go for the 0 or 5W30 depending on your weather.

Per Tech Journal above Volvo 4 Cylinders had engine replacements and rebuilds. What was really the problem? This video is interesting.
