Brake Squeak

Post by gherman »

I have a 2000 S40 with new brakes on the rear. They squealed on light braking, so I put some of that red-rubbery stop-squeak on the back of the pads. When they get warm, the squeaking returns, but not as often. So I put more stop-squeak with no result.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Did you have the rotors resurfaced? If not then get used to the squeak, you could sand your rotors down with 120grit to get the glaze off.

What kind of pads did you use? You can sometimes get squeaks from non-OEM pads.

One trick I've done is to round off the corners of the pads. Volvo OEM pads come with the leading and trailing edges that have a 45 degree angle. You can take a file and grind down the corners of your pads (though wear a mask and do it outside so you don't inhale any toxic dust). You usually don't have to do much to get rid of the squeak.

Did you use brake grease (Sil-glide or something like that) on the back of the pads when you put them in?

Good luck!

They're Volvo pads. Greased 'em too.

Thanks!
