Are all three timing marks lined up? If you don't get all three aligned within reason before you lock down the cam cover you can end up locking the cams in a interference condition.

Would that have shorted the system out? No but Skloon is correct. It could be wire damage due to Mice. The plastic insulation on the wiring is a soybean based plastic. In times of famine, mice will try to utilize the plastic as a food source. A thorough wire harness inspection would be a good start.

I always thought that soft meant they had air in them; they are not a sealed unit and will refill with 100% oil in their own in time. They do have check valves in them.
