Here's a picture that will help. Says to just remove the clips from the strut. This shows how to remove the entire hinge...you don't want to do that. Just the strut.

Make sure your battery connections are tight and the battery has a full charge with no dead cells. Could be the culprit. You can check for dead cells with a battery hydrometer available at any auto parts store. They are cheap.
