Just to add to this excellent DIY, youtube channel "Robinson's Auto Repair" has 4 episodes on 1999 Volvo S70 2.4T Cylinder Head replacement. A lot of good tips:

Just redid the inlaws, same issue blown exhaust value, started right up but has bad exhaust leak......
The manifold was cleaned and checked, I don't think 25nm is much force and I have heard of people warming up the car and retorquing the nuts an extra few lbs to get a seal?
thanks

On mine the machinist asked to see the cam followers ( lifters) they found one plugged up and another with a broken spring. I had no compression in a cylinder and when I pulled the head I had one blown exhaust valve.

Clearwater has a web site, www.cylinder-heads.com/

Currently $500 for an 850 head, but I'd call them if working on a turbo.

I have just finished replacing the head gasket on my 1997 850 non turbo. I followed Tracy's instructions and could not have tried to tackle this without them (Thanks Tracy). After completing this and starting the car I noticed excessive smoke from the tailpipe and smoke from the dipstick and the oil fill upon inspection. I completed a compression test of the cylinders and got 160#, 130#, 130#, 150# and 160#. I also did a block leakage test and that showed negative for gases coming through the coolant system. I did not replace the PVC system however I did make sure it was not plugged. Shortly before the head gasket blew I had done the glove test and had vacuum on the dipstick and the oil fill. I am not sure where to go from here. Looking for advice on this. Thanks for any feedback.

Put some oil in the cylinders and report wet compression. You might have worn out rings.

Thanks for the reply. I did do a wet compression test on the two cylinders that were low 130 # and it increased to almost 160 #. If the rings are worn would that cause pressure in the dipstick tube and the oil fill? I love the car but its not worth paying someone to rebuild the engine.
Thanks for your help.

Perhaps by trying to clean the PCV you actually blocked it. The 130 psi is not healthy and should be between 200 and 210 for a healthy non turbo engine. That factor alone can cause excess blow-by into the crankcase however if it wasn't there to begin with.......

The best service of a PCV is a replacement.
