99 S70 Base. No crank, No turnover after Dash swap

Post by ashlee2319 »

1999 s70 non-turbo.
Just put a new dash in. Finished everything, connected the battery, went to turn the key to start-
and no start. No cranking either. Just the sound of the starter.

During my dash swap, I did put in a used clockspring. I connected everything up to it but I don't think I was careful enough with it.

I found this thread: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=34639
#11 is what I did not do...

Could this affect my no start?

There is a long wire hanging down near the alarm module ( behind steering wheel), with spring like end to it. It has a flat end I can push down on and has a tiny spring back. I can't figure out where that goes...

This dash is from a c70 and the wiring wasn't 100% mirrored.

There is this hanging wire and one another green connector that I cant figure out where it goes either. It's located more near the radio/climate control.

This looks like some kind of switch, not just a wire.

That's a switch belonging to an alarm system, if I'm not way off the mark. Not a stock one either, so there may have been modifications made to the wiring. Could be a major PITA to track down.

Also, remember that there are certainly unused connectors and stuff back there, so you shouldn't assume that everything goes somewhere. A quick glance at the accessories catalogue for these cars show a myriad of stuff, and I myself struggled like a madman with some wires and a connector in my old T5-R, only to find that it was the wiring for the optional trunk area ventilator fans and switch.

Could the alarm system preventing it from not starting? And how about the clockspring piece?

This dash allowed me to connect that small alarm piece located on the outside top of the dash, closest to the windshield.

As I repeatedly tried to start it, I heard erratic clicking and then my interior lights would flicker. I always feel like I am thorough with matching up wires, but I will remove the steering wheel and check again.
Otherwise, my last resort is switching out the wiring harness from my old one.

Erratic clicking and flickering is probably the key. Something's hooked up wrong, or not at all.

The alarm system could absolutely prevent starting - and a jerry rigged aftermarket one could be an absolute pain to untangle. :(

If all else fails. This may be the best option.
Second time removing a dash should be faster, I hope.

OK, I switched out the wire harnesses, back to my old one.
Battery is dead. Went to jump it- NO start. All of my interior lights come in as well as the radio. No more erratic clicking.

Turns out the connection from the new harness included a key ring connection- no match for my car.

Could it be the starter? I don't see how a simple wrong connection could have caused this much trouble...
