Ive got a lead on a $650 engine with good history local.

When I was contemplating the same procedure I was told pretty universally that the head re-work was 15 hours labor and the engine swap was 18. I can't imagine that has changed.

Dealer charges 10 hours for rear main seal replacement so Evan's estimate is good if you do little else other than out with old and in with new. Based on the time, if you have to do this then if you have a lead on a known good running engine with history that is a good start. question, would you do all that work without a timing belt, rear main, trans inner seal?

You can have the good running '98 NA engine sitting in my garage for cheap... only has 270k miles. Runs like a top!

Only problem is the location...

As far as hours for an engine swap, including a basic PCV and timing belt job on a '98 NA, I would say 12-14 hours if you're really working hard. My cousin and I pulled the aforementioned engine in about 3 hours, and it probably took me about 4 hours of work (or less) to get the engine into my S70 and running after doing the refresh work (oil pan seals, PCV, timing belt, cam/crank seals, cam cover reseal, etc.), which probably took another 5-6 hours. I was able to pull the old engine from my S70 pretty quickly since it was the same situation here, I pulled the head anticipating redoing the head, but heavy corrosion on the cylinder walls made the ultimate decision for me.
