Thanks abscate. I also noticed with the oil gauge installed, when the engine is cold, oil pressure goes up to about 75ish... almost near the end of the gauge (80 is the max in the display)... but when the engine has reached normal operating temp it settles at 25-35 when idling... increases when rev'd...
Could that high oil pressure when cold a sign of something going bad?

Cold oil is thick and that pressure doesn’t seem out of line. An air cooled VW with a puny oil pump will run 50-60 psi at cold start.
No worries. Are you running a 10-30 or 10-40 oil?

i bought from an online store 20W-40 oil. It's cheap, maybe that's why its bubbling, (that's the reason why I want to try the additive first). will let u know how it goes...

hi abscate, abscate wrote: 01 Jan 2026, 04:23 I am trying to remember if they are standard o rings or if the have a special profile
You want the right parts here as this is critical engine function. Skip the additives and stop leaks, that won’t help here.
thank you for this information. it helped me a lot in finding the right size o-rings.
I ended up dropping the pan, sludge is almost half a centimeter deep. my only issue was I missed the bolt holes when I inserted the two of the four long bolts on the transmission side.... I did not realize that the two middle bolts squeezed in between the fly wheel and the block... it felt like the threads got chewed up while I was tightening them... felt like a loose thread.... when the engine started I could hear something grinding... (and some loud ticking)... after a few minutes one of the long bolts dropped!...
