volvo xc90 2.5t axle removal question

Post by huzzsaba »

Can the front cv axle be removed by disconnecting the strut from the knuckle and the upper stabilizer link? I don't want to mess with removing the ball joint or tie rod if not necessary.

Thanks

I recently did this job following instructions from this site.

My approach strut compressor from loaner tool program at local chain auto store.
Ratcheting strap 2" wide for control arm.
A little heat applied to sleeve holding ball joint for removal.

I would recommend this approach, trick is the widest / strongest ratcheting strap you can find.

Late but yes, the two lower strut bolts and the upper sway bar link (lift both wheels to remove the tension on the sway bar) will do. Just make sure to remove the axle center bolt in the first place and free the axle spline a little so the axle has movement when the spindle will twist to side. The axle must be preserved without hanging or the CV joint can became dismantled which is a big pain.

But given the strut bolts are kind of tight and the upper sway bar link bolt it usually jammed solid, I wonder if the tie rod is an alternate option (keeping the ball joint in place).
