Half Volvo, half Mitsubishi, the first generation Volvo S40 and V40 compact car debuted in 1995, and was completely redesigned and relaunched in 2004, where it was all Volvo.

The first generation came with variety of 4-cylinder engines, including 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 gasoline engines, the largest being offered with two turbo choices: 2.0T and T4 (high pressure turbo). In addition to the dizzying array of engines, Europe got a 1.9 liter diesel. The United States market got exactly one engine: the 1.9 with the low-pressure turbo.

Second Generation S40 2004–2012

Second generation S40, built on the P1 platform.

Model year 2004.5 saw the S40 in an all-new, Volvo P1 platform-based design, built at the Volvo factory in Ghent, Belgium. The four-cylinder engine was out in favor of Volvo’s famously durable inline 5, which had been serving in Volvos starting with the 1993 Volvo 850.

Second Generation V40 = V50

The second generation wagon at this point became the V50, and like the 2004.5 S40, it was based on the P1 platform and built in Ghent, Belgium.


Help!!! I own a 2004 S40 1.9L (Volvo/Mitsubishi – older model)

I recently did timing belt job and cant get the car to start again. I understand I need to have proper 1) Spark 2) compression 3) fuel 4) air and 5) timing. I also understand that Volvo does NOT base timing off TDC but relies on TIMING MARKS. (Side Q?: Is this true?).

So, I do have timing marks lined up (check), fuel (check), air (check), spark (check), but NO COMPRESSION on any of the four cylinders. I’ve heard I may be on “exhaust stroke” versus “Compression Stroke” hence no compression. I found it strange. If so, can you answer the following questions and also inform me of any others steps I should take.

Q1?: why no compression on any of the cylinders?

Q2?: how do I fix / correct valves and get timing back to the correct compression stroke?

Q3?: Is the 2004 S40 1.9L (Volvo/Mitsubishi – older model) an interference engine or non-interference?

Q4?: how do I check valves are seated correctly and not damaged?

I have a 08 volvo s40 ive replace master cylinder and get no brake fluid from driver rear but all other calipers show fluid when i open the bleed valve i have no clogs in the line i checked with air compressor just can’t get fluid to bleeder????

My car has a kind of foul smell inside the cabin. I have sent to 4 mechanics but they all claimed it’s normal to have little smell for old Volvo car but I am not convinced.

The only thing I’m wary is the aircon compressor is going to give way ie has rough sound. In addition, my previous neighbour used to rare huge number of cats which inadvertently causing smelly cages parked right beside my car at the porch.

I need to replace my driver rear strut; however I would rather replace the entire thing with a quick strut/coilover.

I cant find any. Can anyone help? Maybe there is another make/model that has interchangeable coilovers?

I have a Volvo S 40 2 litre diesel 2006.
I am having trouble starting it, by means of the key turns but it won’t fire up. When I push start it it fires up and is fine. It is not the starter or alternator. I have replaced it. Can it be a electrical problem ? It seems if the vehicle doesn’t get enough diesel. Anybody with the same problem or any advice ?

I have a 2008 volvo s40. I love my car, but when I drive it, the power drops and the car goes very slow, then the rpms go to about 3000 before shifting sometimes up to 4000. I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem or if anyone could share any ideas on what it might be causing this. And also, when driving once I get above 50mph, the rpms drop then come back up then drop again… it keeps doing this while driving it… does it sound like an air problem to any of you guys??

Hi, I have a 1998 Volvo S40 2.0l automatic. The problem I have is that the central locking does not work at all and I can only lock the drivers side by pushing down the door knob, it can be opened by the key then I have to open all the doors by hand. Same as when I lock the car up. Also the central locking button on the dashboard doesn’t work either. I have checked all the fuses and they are all good. Please can someone help

I have a 2001 S40 that I lost the key for at work. Had to have it towed to a Volvo dealer and after messing up 3 of their key blanks trying to cut it, they got one from another dealer. About 10-20 minutes at the most from the dealership, my car just cut off & wouldn’t start on the highway. I should have towed it back to the dealer but had it towed to my house. Now I can’t get it to run. It acts like it’s not getting gas. It will try to start but not fire up completely. Any suggestions?

Dear Sirs, I am having rear wiper motor issues on my 2000 V40. I suspect wiring, plus the motor is no good. Can you advise me on what voltage I should have at the three different wires going to the motor, with the switch both in the on and off positions, and where if any are the relay(s)/fuses for that motor

I have been having an idle issue with my s40 2002. I cleaned the IAC, I replaced the coolant sensor. I replaced the MAF with a new one. Idle problem is gone. But the coolant fan keeps running n and on after I turn the car off. The fan will turn on even if I turn the key to the position right below the starting position, car NOT turned on. All the dash lights will be on without turning the engine over and the fan will come on for like about 2-5 minutes. Engine ice cold the fan comes on anyway and runs for 2-5 minutes. The temp gauge in dash indicates NO overheating, and in fact the temp after running the car is perfect right in the middle of the gauge. The fan will run on and on AFTER turning the car off. I will change out the thermostat next and hopefully this is the problem. MAF-new, IAC cleaned, Coolant sensor-new, thermostat-next thing to be changed out. Any advice?

ell bad news. My S40 is experiencing the idle thing now it will not idle. I have it close to stage “0”. Everything fluid has been changed. Car was running fine, then gradually started to idle low and then lower and now will not idle at all. I cleaned the IAC idle control valve, and MAF, and cleaned the spotless throttle body just because I had it exposed. All vacuum lines and hoses appear to be ok.

I have an update. My s40 2002 stalled a couple of times recently. It has sat in my guest parking for about a month. It starts but runs like crap bad enough that I do not trust it to drive Anywhere! Anyway sat there for a month went out and it started right up. No kidding. It ran smooth too no more running like crap. I still do not trust it as I have no idea what started the whole stalling thing. And now I have no idea why it is running smooth after the recent episode of stalling and running rough. Has anyone had any similar problems? I want to take it to first get the tire pressure back up and then hook it up to a diagnostic to get some codes read. Wish me luck. Car looks too darn good to let go. I’ve only had it for four years.

My 2007 S40 has developed a severe automatic transmission clunk at 100,000 miles. It does not happen all of the time. It occurs mostly during a downshift toward the lower gear.

I just bought a 2000 s40 1.9t. I had it hooked up to code reader and I got the codes p0014, p1618, and p0705. This was done at auto zone and there computers could not tell me what the problem was for volvo. Can anyone help with these codes please?

Had a 04′ Volvo V40 till it got totaled Feb22 this year. That Volvo for Life shit needs to be renamed Volvo-ProLife, No joke Hit a 01′ Caddy at 40 mph and no one got killed or even hurt. Infact to my HORROR the quote “totalled” car restarted and climbed uphill on command!!!! The handling was fucked I admit. Despite depolying passenger airbag, radiator being smashed into where the hood should have been. Yah and the interior being shoved half a foot back. I was able to move the stricken stationwagon out of traffic’s way. The look on those cops faces when I told them “Yah that’s the debris way over there, YES my car did restart and I drove it as is.. It’s a Volvo, Swedish Steel superiority right there.” Not sure why you guys want to send it to a salvage place, it will only break their salvage equipment!!!! Everyone kinda LOL’d. Learned “AFTER” the accident that the brakes were recalled. You will know if your brakes are recalled if it takes forever to stop. (1986 Chevy C20 3/4 ton pickup stops better) RIP 784 YNQ..

I have a 1999 V40 2.0L which after 10 – 12 minutes dispaly a warning which looks like a three pronged lighting strike, it is in the bottom right corner of the display, it does not go out until the engine is turned off. Other than a little hesitattion of the throttle when cold nothing seems wrong, what is this and if I buy a code reader what is the right type? You help would be greatly appreciated. I found the 16 pin connection Ok.

My car is running great but I would like a little more power out of it is there any suggestions? I already have a k&n filter installed and I removed all the foam madness from air box. But I think I need to clean the EGR and throttle body out because now I am getting worse mileage than before. I do not push the car much to take off and it does not need to. I am more concerned with longevity and reliability. Also my brother bought a Volvo because I told him I love both my Volvos. He’s had nothing but trouble. First the problematic Throttle body issue. Now the transmission is out. I feel really bad now about suggesting Volvo to him. Eh Volvo? Are you listening?

I need to know what kind of coolant does a 2002 s40 take. I also want to tell everyone about the absolutely great customer service i recieved from xemodex for my wife’s v70. It went stressless and easy except trying to get to the starter bracket to slip the wire loom from behind it. I think Volvo does this on purpose to piss DIY people off. Anyway I am really impressed. 1 called provided VIN and card #. 2 got the part in the mail the next am. 3 pulled out old part. 4 installed new part. The biggest problem other than taking off the bracket was it was raining all damn morning.

Hi i took a set of leater seats out of a 98 v40 and put them into a 00 v40 . the wireing under the seat is different . does anyone wich of the 4 couler wires to join up with the black/ red and white wires on the seat to reconect the airbag on the seat and get rid of the light on the dash . 2000 S40 Started to cut off battery radio works got it towed to the shop but they can’t seem to figure out what the problem is. it’s not the fuel filter or the ground to the fuel pump any ideas

My 2000 S40 won’t start on occasion. New Tumbler, new starter installed, This not starting only happens on occasion and if I leave the car alone for a while it cranks fine. The battery is fine (new).

I too need help with the timing mark of the crank year. I found a slot marking, but I see that the 1 piston is at bottom so this does not make any sens to me. I always was tought that TPD is when the piston one is at top. Not at bottom. Can you help?

I am looking for the physical width, inside & outside measurement of the front r/hand side drive shaft seal
were the CV-joint enters the transmission box. It’s leaking gearbox oil through there.

I have heard that mitsubishi and volvo came together on this one, but no where can I find any Japanese parts other than the trans, which BTW is the only issue on the car for me anyway. It slips too much IMO. But that is the case with most automatic transmissions anyway so no big deal there. I have seen the mitsubishi version and it does share the body but it is made in netherlands as well so half japanese is not accurate. 90% european contents makes this a stalwart car, But the only down turn is the trans as is the case with most Japanese transmissions used on several European makes.
