MSD 8207 Blaster Ignition Coil installation photos from when I put this on my 1997 Volvo 850 T-5. There’s no gotchas or complexity here. If you can turn a wrench you can do this. This MSD has worked fine, no complaints at all. It’s a solid part of any Stage 0.
To start on the project, we headed over to Portland Speed Industries’ Dynojet chassis dynamometer to get some baseline numbers and to verify that all the stage 0 items had been completed. Starting with a solid foundation is key; it is absolutely imperative to go through the vehicle and make sure all wear items are in OEM new condition or better before trying to make additional power. This is so important to the performance of these cars that the Volvo community has coined a term for it: Stage 0. Thanks to diligent maintenance by CKA motorsports the XC arrived prepped and ready for some upgrades!
The other day I found myself stumbling over the definition of torque. Don’t let this happen to you. Read Rye of RZ Design‘s outstanding definition of what this torque thing really is.
Not all tuners adjust the ECU calibrations the same, that likely doesn’t surprise you. However what might surprise you is how it’s actually done. Here at ARD we tune each ECU by hand according to the customers environment, vehicle mods and particular driving style. Each file is read out from the ECU then decoded and put into our editor. We then edit the necessary maps, save the file, and load it back to the ECU. By tuning ECU’s this way we can make sure that all the relevant maps and values are edited for optimal performance and efficiency.
So many times non turbo owners jump on the forums and ask what they can do to improve performance and power and are met with the old stand by answer, “Sell it and buy a turbo”. While this advice may actually be well intentioned, and possibly the best option for a high powered build, there are still ways to improve the performance of these non turbo models. Our scheduled build is intended to be very approachable to the average owner with off the shelf parts and tuning of our 1995 Volvo 850. So let’s start by outlining the build and talk about what we can expect.
Two weeks ago today we started working with RZ Design on the R32 turbo kit they offer for 2004-2007 R models. With RZ doing the hard work of the install in the first week it left the remainder of the next week for us to complete the tuning. The turbo on this kit is capable of over 500bhp so reining that in to keep the engine safe was priority number one! The engine in stock form is capable of handling approx.
Spark plugs are a pretty basic maintenance item in most cars but with turbocharged cars, especially those making higher than stock levels of power, spark plugs become a vital part of the power delivery system. Additional tune up items typically include cap/rotor and spark plug wires but spark plugs take the brunt of the wear in the ignition and it’s not uncommon to have to replace them 3-4 times before any other ignition systems components require attention. With that said let’s look at the options out there and the benefits of each.
