Bridging the NACS Gap

No, that’s not a river in Europe, NACS is the de-facto standard charging port for EVs in North America. Volvo issued a press release days ago speaking about how it is including an adapter with each EX90 until their EVs are manufactured with NACS built in, which last year they said would be 2025. I presume that will mean 2026 model year Volvos get the NACS standard port. The current port standard in EV Volvos is CCS.

It’s a stopgap measure reminiscent of Macs and PCs sticking to various oddball connection protocols before USB swept in and standardized the field to great worldwide relief in the late 1990s. But it’s like a bandaid: better to get the pain done, and done early.

The move to NACS will allow Volvo EVs to charge at Tesla chargers – the Supercharger network. This capability will happen with the adapter or the built-in NACS Volvos in 2025, either one. The result is the same whether you’ll use the adapter or buy a Volvo EV next year. The only difference is the adapter is a little clunky because it’s a removable component you’ll have to store in the back seat or trunk/cargo area.

These new charging points come in addition to Volvo drivers’ existing access to tens of thousands of fast-charge points. Charging at Tesla Superchargers and other North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers will be enabled by an adapter included with the purchase of a new Volvo EX90 flagship SUV, EX40 or EC40 fully electric vehicle starting with model year 2025.

NACS adapters are also available to drivers of current fully electric Volvo cars and can be ordered at authorized Volvo Cars retailers in the United States and Canada for US$230/CA$310 MSRP starting today. Adapters will begin shipping to retailers on November 18, 2024. Availability of adapters for the EX30 will be announced later.
