According to a Volvo customer service bulletin, Volvo’s new flagship SUV will not roll out with all its bells and whistles. Those features are likely to be added some time after delivery, either through a dealer service or over-the-air update.
The list may grow, given the bulletin gives itself some degree of wiggle room: “The below is a list and description of the features and functionalities that may be delayed when taking delivery of your EX90. These features will be added later via an update. You can check back here for any updates to this list.”
According to the bulletin, these are the affected features:
- Lidar first safety scenario
- Cross traffic alert
- Straight crossing
- Curve speed assist
- Apple CarPlay
- Light theme in Center and driver screen
- Battery drainage
- Smart Charging
- Plug & Charge
- Bi-directional charging
This doesn’t come as a great shock to me. Backporting features isn’t uncommon on new vehicles, and if there’s any relief in this it’s that all these items are entirely software, not hardware, from what I can see. With Volvo’s EX30 delivery deadline slips, it’s clear Volvo’s first wave of clean-sheet design EV models is facing headwinds, and that’s no surprise.
The Volvo EX90 is Volvo’s large, 7-seat EV SUV offering and was announced in November 2022, and began production in early June 2024 at a Volvo plant in South Carolina. It’s a replacement for the flagship XC90 model, a long-running, popular offering that debuted in 2003.
