1985 Car & Driver Review: Volvo 740 Turbo

Its smooth, sturdy, and responsive manners and pavement-thumping 160 horsepower take back seat to none of its four-cylinder foes, turbocharged or not.

C&D 1985 740T review

“Pavement-thumping 160 horsepower” … is something you don’t hear today. Economy cars have more, and Volvo sedans like the S60 Polestar Engineered pack 405 HP and run to 60 MPH in 4.4 seconds. This 740 Turbo was considered fast, obviously, with its mark of 7.9 0-60 MPH.

Those days are gone.

Anyway, read the article, it’s a great piece by Larry Griffin, writing for my favorite car magazine when it was putting out high quality automotive journalism. Sadly, C&D is but a shadow of its former self, a sad, uncritical parody, a naked, mindless promoter for today’s manufacturers who keep the money coming in.
