The Volvo ES90 was revealed last week to great fanfare. It follows the EX90 and EX30 full EV models both revealed in the last 20 months. The ES90 is a fully electric car, blends sedan elegance, fastback versatility, and — according to Volvo — SUV space. It offers a higher ride height, ample interior room, and a balance of style and practicality.
Built on advanced 800V technology, it charges faster and drives farther (a claimed 434 miles) than previous Volvo electric models, with core computing power eight times stronger than the last generation. Naturally, safety remains central, rooted in Volvo’s Scandinavian design heritage.
The exterior features a distinctive profile, Thor’s Hammer headlights, and C-shaped LED rear lamps, which you also might view as brackets “[ ]”. It provides 424 liters of cargo space, expandable to 733 liters, plus a 22-liter frunk. Inside, a long wheelbase means generous legroom, paired with premium materials, a panoramic roof, and a quiet cabin. Options include a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos and a Google-built infotainment system on a 14.5-inch screen.

The ES90 gets via over-the-air updates, powered by dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin chips. Its 800-volt system delivers up to 700 km of range and adds 300 km in 10 minutes of fast charging. With a drag coefficient of 0.25, it’s Volvo’s most efficient car yet. Safety features include a robust cage, advanced sensors, and a driver monitoring system, upholding Volvo’s rigorous standards.
Order books are open in select markets, adding the ES90 as Volvo’s fifth North American electric model alongside the EX90, EX40, EC40, and EX30.
My take: To my eye it’s a lifted sedan, like AMC pioneered over 50 years ago, much like the modern Toyota Crown sedan. At the end of the day it’s a Volvo and has all the very cool Volvo touches normally found in their cars, and we’d expect nothing less. I’m hoping Volvo can quickly work toward a streamlined software effort to smooth that area of Volvo ownership that recent buyers have been vocal about.
