Volvo Headliner Rear Clips for 850 Sedan, V70

After much ado, wolfspiritky was able to figure out the rear headliner clips on his Volvo 850. You will also find information in this thread about the newer V70 headliner. I hope it’s helpful to someone. – MIJ

This discussion all started when he needed to take out the headliner for his 1995 Volvo 850 sedan to access his sunroof. The headliner of his Volvo 850 is secured by two clips near the rear window. Some of the plastic trim had suffered from age, UV exposure, weather cycles through the season, and he was concerned it was brittle enough that he might break something if he started prying to get the clips to release.

One factor that helped was that another user, MadeInJapan (Dave) had access to the parts diagram for the 1998 Volvo V70, which is made and secured in a similar way, and was able to share it – complete with most of the part numbers.

“My first inclination is to pinch the posts on that square job…it’s worth a try. If you hear it crack then lay off…but you’ve got to get it off one way or another, anyway, right?”

Hi! I have 3 problems/?s re: 1997 850 w/ sunroof
1. My 1997 850 GLT with sunroof headliner is peeling off and sagging. I can buy headliner material (foam back and not as pretty as mine) at Hancock Fabrics for a reasonable price, but im not sure how to replace it. Are the parts you sell to fix saggy headliners a spiral twist- on design that screws into the liner to hold the material up? Do the screw into anything other than the headliner itself? The foam which seems glued to the metal itself is rotting in spots and probably rotten all over. Will the screws hold the sunroof liner up also?I live in Austin, Tx and until 2001 my car was garaged but not now!
2. Also, the clear coat is aged, white and peeling. Is there a product or anything I can do for that?
3. The black trim (bumper, etc ) is faded-is there a product to to restore it?
4. Finally, the black trim atop the chrome trim around the windshields and roof is cracked and peeling. The dealer said its ornamental and can be removed (windshields won’t leak, etc). If I peel it off, will the chrome then be discolored/damaged? Is there a product to protect it?
I will be doing this all myself and need info on amy special tools, glue, etc. also.
Thanks for your time and advice.
