Badges are usually stuck to the car using two methods: posts or adhesive tape. Post-mounted badges are easy to remove since they only require the correct size nut driver socket. Unfortunately, some poor folks have tried to remove adhesive taped badges and have damaged their car using metal paint scrapers or worse. An easy way to remove badges is to use good old dental floss instead of a scraper or razor blade.
Wrap the floss around your fingers and gently saw the floss between the badge and your car’s paint. The sawing action cuts through the foam core of the adhesive tape and allows the badge to fall right off. Don’t try pulling the floss through though — it’ll just snap. Saw back and forth steadily with frim pressure to get a good cut.
An adhesive remover will remove the remaining glue without any problems. Acetone and paint stripper are big no-nos! Don’t be one of those people who ruin their Volvo’s paint job just removing a badge. You can adhesive remover from your local hardware store, auto parts store, and Walmarts.
Always put the remover on a rag, not on the paint. Start by wiping the foam to soak it with the remover. Then use your finger inside the rag with adhesive remover and roll away the remaining tape from the edge. The tape will usually start to come off in a nice strip if you’re slow and steady. Sometimes there will be debris stuck in the crevasses that will scratch your paint if you scrub too hard.
If you need to remove a badge on the exterior of your car, take some tips from this Volvo Forum topic:
A little heat, a little dental floss, and a steady hand will do the trick. Goo Gone for the adhesive.
