This is a write up for the removal, cleaning, installation and alignment of the PNP switch.
- Tools Required:
- 10mm wrench
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 17mm socket & 17mm deep socket
- T-25 Screw Driver
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Channel Lock Pliers
- Sharp pair of scissors
- Small Pocket Knife
- PB Blaster/WD-40

Procedure
First place the car in park, hand brake on, and block all 4 wheels.
Next disconnect the battery using a 10mm wrench and lift it up and out of the battery tray.
Remove the air guide by puching the front away and off of the radiator and then pull it up and off of the lower airbosx housing.
The arrows point in the direction of travel for the front and back of the air guide, respectively.
Using a T-25, remove the black cover over the throttle body.
Take some PB Blaster/WD-40 and spray the 2 bolts holding the battery tray to the frame and the bolt holding the positive battery cable.
Remove the airbox:
Use a flat head screw driver and loosen the lower clamp on the MAF to Throttle pipe.
Releae the electrical connector for the MAF
Remove any small tubes attached to the upper portion of the airbox.
Now, pull up on the lower portion of the MAF to Throttle pipe.
Pull the end of the airbox closest to the motor straight up, then pull the entire assembly towards the motor in order to release the 3 plastic connectors holding the airbox down. Don’t forget to navigate
the metal preheat pipe out of the engine bay.
Battery Tray Removal:
Remove the two 12mm bolts holding the battery tray down and the 10mm bolt that holds the bracket for the positive battery cable.
With the 3 bolts removed, pull the battery tray towards the motor to unclip the fasteners at the fender side of the battery tray.
Now flip the battery tray upside down so you can disconnect the vacuum hose for the cruise control and the electrical connector.

The Volvo 850 Saloon / Sedan
Volvo unveiled an entirely new model series in June 1991, the Volvo 850 GLT. The Volvo 850 GLT was launched under the banner of “A dynamic car with four world-beating breakthroughs”.
The four new features were: transverse 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, Delta-link rear axle which combined the dynamics and ride comfort of independent suspension with the security of a live rear axle, the SIPS integrated side-impact protection system, and the self-adjusting front seat belt mechanism.
The exterior design of the 850 bore a strong Volvo identity, and its 740 and 940 heritage was immediately apparent.
Volvo 850 GLT received a tumultuous welcome; seldom has a new car reaped so many awards as the 850.
Over the intervening years, the 850 series has been expanded with additional variants, among them turbocharged petrol versions and a direct-injection turbo-diesel.
The Volvo 850 was also the first car in the world to offer side-impact airbags, which were introduced in autumn 1994.
In model year 1997, the S70 replaced the 850 Sedan car.

Costas – I have the same problem. Only p0700 code is being thrown. Did you ever find the problem?
Please help. I have a volvo s60 T2.0 auto on 2005. My car goes on a safe mode and a p0700 code show that a PNP is faulty. Any one had similar issues please?
P0705 – Transmission Range Sensor Circuit (PRNDL Input) light, on my 1996 Volvo – the range sensor will not allow me to smog the car
thank you soo much for this. my 1996 volvo 850 glt was shifting erratically off and on. i had read a lot about the pnp switch. after doing several fluid changes and the same thing was happening i decided to do the pnp switch thing. i have hardly any car mechanic skills. i followed these instructions and pictures and sure enough it was the cure! my car is shifting without any problems now. i did sand/grind down the copper points of contact because they looked black. the shiny new copper surface is really making contact now! anyways thank you for this it only cost me 10 bucks in materials and about 4 hours of work. you did a very good job of explaining.
thanks again!

My mistake you did have the two tabs on the electrical box in your tutorial for some reason that page didn’t print … I missed it somehow so my apologies… Cheers…
Awesome tutorial… Just replaced pnp switch on my 1996 850. Just one thing I want to note. When you split the electrical box up into three there are two tabs that must be lifted or broken off to allow you to pull the connectors out while using channel locks and a small pocket knife to move that blue tab inside. You’ll never pull the connectors out without popping those two tabs… You may want to add that to this tutorial. Thank you for posting you saved me a few hundred on this repair. BTW I’ve had my 850 for 11 years… GREAT CAR….
