[I’m going outside the usual MVS Newsletter format to focus on yesterday’s big XC40 news from Volvo.]

The most exciting news of October is without a doubt the release of the fully electric XC40, what they call “XC40 Recharge”.

Volvo Cars Launches Fully Electric Volvo XC40 Recharge

From their press kit: Today Volvo Cars introduces the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first ever fully electric car and the first model to appear in its brand new Recharge car line concept.

The XC40 Recharge, based on the multi-award-winning and best-selling XC40 small SUV, is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. It represents a true milestone for Volvo Cars: the company’s first electric car and the first Volvo with a brand new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system. XC40 Recharge Important Numbers

  • 249 miles of range (estimated, European test)
  • 408 horsepower
  • under $50k
  • 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.7 seconds

Every Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.

Big Change

Volvo calls electrification “biggest change in the history of the automobile”, and now we have Volvo’s first electric automobile. In my opinion they’re late to this game. I think they took their time to get it right, plus… well… they’ve had a lot on their plate. Like any electric car, the biggest question is range. A 200 mile range is the psychological dividing line, followed by number of, and proximity to, charging stations. According to Car & Driver, Volvo promises “more than 200” miles of range in the U.S.

Also: ‘It charges to 80 percent in 7.5 hours at home and in 40 minutes using a fast-charging system that we estimate at 50 kW; Volvo hasn’t yet teamed up with a charging network.’

The 249 miles number above is generous. That number was from the European test cycle, which is known to be aggressively forgiving. The lack of a partnership for a charging system is somewhat alarming… but there’s time.

XC40 Recharge and Future Volvos Powered By Android Automotive OS

And with the news of the XC40 Recharge: the new Volvo XC40 introduces a brand new infotainment system powered by Android with Google technologies built-in.

This is not Android Auto, Google’s version of CarPlay. Confusingly, it’s Android Automotive OS. Confused? The former is the “smaller” of the two, running infotainment duties mostly. Android Automotive OS on the other hand is a whole-car system. It will receive software and operating system updates over the air, like Tesla’s cars and SUVs. My #1 hope for this system is security. Features are nice, they make our lives easier, but this system is so meshed with the car, it is the car. I’d trade all the features for bulletproof security. Security holes can allow full control of the vehicle, from doors locking to actual throttle control, so they’ve got to get this right.

Volvo And Geely To Merge Their Combustion Engine Operations

Volvo Cars and Geely intend to merge their existing combustion engine operations into a stand-alone business in order to establish a new global supplier that will seek to develop next generation combustion engines and hybrid powertrains. Download the PDF.

R Sport Catalog from 1979

Check out this blast from the past. Forum thread: In addition, our own bmdubya1198 posts mid-1990s IPD catalog pages. Also check out his sweet (gone) 245 in that same topic, direct link “It was intercooled, small bumpers. That pic was 1999. Bought it in ..’90 (?). Then an old guy with dementia did this at 7AM on a Sunday morning. We jumped out of bed at the noise. Demolished his K car, drove off somehow, fluids all over the street, dragging plastic all the way home. Had no memory of hitting anything. Sad.”

All I can say is that it seems like it has alot of creature comforts. It runs and drives like new. Hope to drive it for a long time coming.”

“I have read and reread all the other forum posts, I have oiled the corners, applied heat, yelled and screamed at it…. drank heavily.. cried.. however i am stuck. any help?”
