2000 V70 GLT… was wondering if I could just have a muffler shop cut out the converter and weld a piece of straight pipe in place of it? My state dosen’t have any emission laws. Will this effect the drivability of the car? Thanks in advance. Any advice about this subject would be greatly appreciated. The cost of a new converter is approx. $1100, and a piece of straight pipe is around $35 to have put in.
Two weeks ago today we started working with RZ Design on the R32 turbo kit they offer for 2004-2007 R models. With RZ doing the hard work of the install in the first week it left the remainder of the next week for us to complete the tuning. The turbo on this kit is capable of over 500bhp so reining that in to keep the engine safe was priority number one! The engine in stock form is capable of handling approx.
Humidified combustion air lowers the peak combustion temperature by hundreds of degrees. This is important as this cooling affects not only the incoming air charge but also any residual pockets of exhaust gas from the previous combustion cycle that can be a trigger for pre-ignition. Adding water/methanol injection to an engine in the proper amount is akin to running higher octane fuel, the increase in ignition timing is so significant that it’s similar to running high octane racing fuel (100+).
The ignition coils used on most cars today haven’t changed all that much in the last 50 years. A simple set of windings that when provided electricity creates a magnetic field that when collapses is amplified and creates enough voltage potential that it can jump a gap between two points. For our purpose with this article that’s as far as we’ll go with the understanding of transformer (ignition coil) fundamentals. Let’s instead focus on the bigger picture as it relates to misfires, specifically those that occur from increase boost and power development.

If the gain in hp from an N/A 850 to a turbo 850 wasn’t that great, then your question would get different answers. But the turbo cars are so much more powerful that the cost/benefit ratio of making an N/A faster just isn’t there. The cost/benefit gets a little better if your N/A is a manual. Note: 1997 GLT models DO have a light pressure turbo, and thus are good for speed mods.
